Where dogs walk
the Provo River Parkway and the trails around Y Mountain

Provo is a university town, and many of its dog owners are students or young families renting for a year or two. Moves, semester breaks and shared housing disrupt a dog's routine, which is one reason some owners look at a stay. If your lease or schedule is likely to change, tell the trainer. A plan that lasts through a move is more useful than one that only works in a single apartment.

The Provo River Parkway is a paved walking and cycling trail beside a river known for fishing, and Y Mountain rises above town with trails of its own. Provo Canyon opens just to the north. The city gets about 57 inches of snow a year, and summers are hot and dry but short. Look up the posted rules for each path, since leash and dog regulations differ between city, county and forest land.

Because Provo lies well south of Salt Lake City, ask early about distance, transport and how a trainer would hand the dog back. For students without a car, a pickup arrangement can decide the whole plan. A handoff lesson at your actual address, with everyone in the home present, is worth requesting. General estimates for a stay run about $1,500 to $2,500 or more for two to three weeks.

Before you book. Three checks.

  1. List the habits you want to change in Provo, and note where they happen, such as the door, the sidewalk or the yard.
  2. Ask any trainer how far they are from Provo in Utah County, who handles drop-off and pickup, and where the handoff lesson takes place.
  3. Plan to practice near the Provo River Parkway and the trails around Y Mountain so the new habits meet real-life distractions.
